Considered to be South India's great temple town, Madurai situated on the river banks of Vaigai river is known for its rich repository of Tamil culture and Heritage. Thirumalai Nayak Palace built in 1636 and was partially restored in the 19th century by Lord Napier. This place has influences of the Islamic culture and has a rectangular courtyard called the Swarga Vilasam (Heavenly Pavilion).. Thiruparangundram temple, being one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan remain a place of centre attraction mostly occupied by the domestic people who comes there to worship. The other temple belonging to the six abodes, will be Alagarkoil, dedicated to Kallalagar a form of Lord Vishnu. Best suitable for the evening sightseeing would be Theppakulam. This is where the annual float festival takes place where during this period boats will be decorated with colorful lights and placed at the centre of the temple tank. Shops around this area is the worth visiting.
