BR Hills & BRT Wildlife Sanctuary

BR Hills is a beautiful picturesque tourist spot and a paradise situated on the south eastern edge of Karnataka at a height of 5090 ft and acts as a link between the Eastern Ghats and the Western Ghats which is drained by the Cauvery and Kapila river. It was in 1972 that the place became a wildlife sanctuary.

It was at this time that cutting down of trees, hunting and the shifting cultivation of the tribalís was stopped. The diversity and growth ratio of the vegetation is mind blowing having the evergreen, deciduous, dry and scrub and even high-altitude vegetation. Wonderful treat to the tourists and researchers searching for rare plants and trees. Some of the animals you can spot here are Sloth Bear, Small Indian Civet, Indian Pangolin, Deer, Common Langur, Clawless Otter, Indian Porcupine, Indian Gerbille and Black Naped Hare. This place is inhabited and occupied by the Soliga tribe who are semi-nomadic tribe living in the interiors of region moving from one place to the other within the forest and they mainly engage in shifting cultivation where the tourists can buy the local crafts from them.

The rich vegetation of the BR Hills supports a wide variety of fauna and exotic birds. The vegetation type includes the dry scrub, deciduous, savanna, evergreen, Shola forests and Grasslands. There are many endangered species residing in the place. Other attraction is the coffee estate was started by a foreigner. Another tourist spot in the area is the Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple dedicated to Lord Ranganatha and the annual car festival takes place during which the tourist can plan along with an option for pilgrimage.
